What is the difference between a seeded lawn and a rolled lawn (sod)?
A seeded lawn is significantly cheaper, but requires patience. Grass seeds usually germinate within 4 to 8 weeks, meaning bare ground is visible over most of the area during this time. The advantage of seeding is full control over the selection of the seed mix, which can be perfectly tailored to the garden's conditions (e.g., mixtures for sun, shade, sports, etc.).
A rolled lawn, on the other hand, provides an almost instant effect of dense, green turf. It is delivered in strips of already rooted, mature grass. Although installation is quick, you need to wait about 2 weeks before walking on it – this is the time required for the roots to merge with the soil. Contrary to popular belief, whether the rolled turf is dedicated "for sun" depends on the producer – the mixes for sod, just like seeds, are chosen according to its intended use.
In both cases, consistent and abundant watering is crucial, especially in the initial phase (germination/rooting), as is the absolute prohibition of walking on the surface during this critical time.
